Part 3

Last month I had the opportunity to attend The Southeastern University (SEU) Leadership Forum in Florida. I was very surprised to get approved for a Visa the first time I applied! I have friends who have applied 3-4 times with no success. This is a training to improve leadership skills with training from some of the most successful leaders in America. While I was there I had the opportunity to have a conversation with Ed Bastian,  Delta Airline’s CEO and Daymond John from the Shark Tank, American entrepreneur Bill Rancic and the commitment guy, Alex Sheen who founded “Because I Said I Would” and many other good speakers.

Do you think that a guy who never really knew his mother because she passed away when he was three years old, who saw his father twice during his life, who lost eight members of his family during the earthquake of 2010, and who never had much hope could have a conversation with the Delta CEO? It was not even a charity event but a leadership forum! So this guy (me!) had the opportunity to explain to Ed Bastian what he is doing in his country of Haiti. In the conversation that I had with Ed Bastian I learned that you can influence other people and that humility is one of the most important characteristics that a good leader should have. I know that could be a typical day for you but for me I will never forget March 16th, 2018. Because it wasn’t a typical day in my life. I had a short conversation with Ed Bastian’s pastor was interesting for me. Since his pastor had such a profound influence on him, Mr Bastion brought him to the conference. To me, this meant that his faith was very authentic.

One of my biggest dreams now is to build a public library in my community in Carrefour because reading is vital. Learning about the past will help us avoid the same mistakes in the future. It is shocking that the second largest community of the capital in Haiti does not even have a public or private library! When I was a child, Carrefour had a library. Unfortunately, it sustained earthquake damage and was closed. Opening a library is a very big dream and one I know I need help with! But I believe everything a person needs to know is found inside a book! So now this is one of my biggest goals for the next three or five years.

I did not become the person I am today by a flash of lightning. I read so many good books, I learned from my past, I took advantage of different opportunities that I found on my way, like the Bridge Scholarship opportunity.  I feel blessed to be helping and serving people and I am always working on my own life. In the Bible, David and Joseph’s stories changed the way that I always see myself. John C. Maxwell, Jeff Keller, David Schwartz, John Bevere, Stormie Omartian, Chris Guillebeau and many other authors have made huge impacts on my life. We have a new generation of leaders who want to change things here in Haiti like: Dr. Valéry Moise, Davidson Toussaint, Pierre Stanley Baptiste, Guerson Petit-Homme; all of those leaders have impacted my life as well. My dream was always to be part of that new generation of leaders who don’t continue complaining about our problems but who will work together and provide solutions to the problems in our communities.

I would like to thank the Bridge Scholarship and all those who supported the scholarship program and those who will support it in the future. I just want to let you know that their work is real and they doing a great work here.

My name is Davidson Jules, I am the Haïti Program Manager for Bridge Scholarship, the ambassador of Impact Hub Haïti, board member of Elit Mastery Academy, a young leader, a Believer and my commitment is to never stop working to improve leadership in my country of Haiti.

Part 2

If you read my introduction (Part 1) you might say, “oh my gosh, poor man, there is no way for him”… and you would be right because life was so difficult for me. But that is not how my story goes.

Let me tell you who I am today and how I got there. Life wasn’t easy for me. I know that life isn’t easy for most people, especially in Haiti. You need to fight for what you really want and my only advantage was that  I had the chance to meet many good people (Haitians, Foreigners…) that gave me possibilities. I surrounded myself with a lot of great people and during that time I never forgot what I had, what I currently have and what I would like to have one day.  My behavior gave me a lot of opportunities and responsibilities. Since my 11 years old I have understood that after trusting God and His promises, education is the only way I have to get better and do better in life so I need to take seriously my studies.  I try to keep learning every day because I want to be ready for any opportunity that can come on my way.Honestly I kept reading or studying hard how I can because I know it is more difficult for an ordinary people to find and get better in life so I need to do a little bit more than just being an ordinary person and bring solutions to people who don’t really have times to read a book per year.Over time I have developed the trust of people with honesty and honoring my commitments to them.

In 2013, I found one of my greatest opportunities which is the Bridge Scholarship program. I was one of their first students and I enjoyed that opportunity as much as I could. This scholarship was a big package with so many opportunities because it is not only a scholarship but it is a leadership program.  After my time in the program I counted more than 12 books that I had read! They are all about personal development, finance, leadership, motivation, faith… etc, of course I know it is not too much but it is enough to build a person’s character, to build a strong foundation of leadership, and to raise more leaders in a country with a lack of good leaders.

During this time, I had the opportunity to attend almost all of the big leadership events in Haiti including seminars on marketing and entrepreneurship. The program also had mentoring sessions every three months where I had the opportunity to listen and meet so many great speakers and leaders like Guerson Petit-Homme (Instagram). Guerson is a very good example of a young leader in Haiti, coming from nothing to becoming the Chief Executive of Delta in Haiti. His life story inspires me so much!

I serve my community doing volunteer works with many organizations (local and international), last year I volunteered with  “Port-au-Prince Startup Week” with Impact Hub Haiti, Alternatiba Haiti in Cite-soleil and with New Hope Baptist Church in Ganthier. I was one of the people who had the responsibility to recruit volunteers for “Logos Hope” the largest boat library in the world when they came  Haiti in August 2017. It’s been 3 years that I have been part of a group that started a movement that is called “Prezan”. It’s logo is “I will attend school this year”. Every October we encourage other people to help children whose parents don’t have enough possibilities to provide them with school supplies. Last year the goal was to provide 1200 children school  supplies but unfortunately we had provided only 850 children but this year we would like to cover over 1800 children and we hope that we will achieve the goal this year.

In my community with other students of the Bridge Scholarship we have started a movement to keep the area where we live always clean and we clean every 2 weeks. We try to give our neighbors a good example because we know doing that will motivate them to no longer throw their garbage in the street.

I support some young men and women in the south of Haiti, Les Cayes, with their soccer team there and I went to different countrysides of Haiti to speak with community leaders particularly young people. I went to Mirebalais, Jacmel, Les Cayes… and I will keep doing that because one person can’t change anything without the community’s commitment to change and live a better life than before!
